The Modern Threat: Identity Attacks
Today’s hackers don’t always break in through firewalls or viruses. More often, they log in using stolen usernames and passwords. Whether it’s through phishing, leaked credentials, or weak passwords, attackers aim to impersonate legitimate users to sneak past traditional security tools.
That’s where Huntress ITDR comes in.
A Story We All Know Too Well
Meet Peter, a local business owner. He runs a small construction company and spends most of his day on site. One morning, Peter’s accountant received an email that looked perfectly normal — an invoice from Peter’s business, same logo, same formatting, even the usual email address.
The invoice had updated payment details. Trusting it was legitimate, the accountant paid the $12,000 bill straight away.
But the money never reached Peter. It went to a hacker’s account. By the time they realised, the funds were gone. Peter’s business lost the payment, and the customer lost their money. Both sides ended up in a dispute, and Peter’s reputation took a hit.
Unfortunately, this isn’t rare. It happens every day to small and medium businesses.
How It Would Look With Huntress ITDR
Now imagine the same situation — but Peter’s business has Huntress ITDR in place.
When the attacker first logged into Peter’s Microsoft 365 account (using a stolen password from a phishing email), Huntress noticed unusual activity:
The login came from a country Peter had never been to.
The attacker tried to create forwarding rules to hide emails.
They accessed the account outside Peter’s normal working hours.
As soon as these rules were broken, Huntress automatically raised an alert and contained the intrusion. The attacker was locked out before any invoices were altered.
Peter and his customer never even knew how close they came to a costly disaster.
The Technical
Huntress ITDR continuously monitors login activity across Microsoft 365 and other identity providers. It looks for unusual patterns such as:
Impossible travel logins (e.g. someone signing in from Sydney and New York within minutes).
Suspicious use of privileged accounts.
Abnormal login times and failed attempts.
Use of legacy authentication methods attackers often exploit.
When these rules are broken, Huntress automatically raises an alert and takes action to contain the threat.
For The Rest of Us
Think of Huntress ITDR like a security guard for your digital identity. Instead of only locking the doors (firewalls, antivirus), it also checks who’s using the keys. If someone sneaks in pretending to be you, Huntress notices the strange behaviour and stops them before they can cause harm.
Why You Need It
Traditional tools aren’t enough. Antivirus and firewalls can’t catch someone using a valid login.
Attackers love easy targets. Small and mid-sized businesses are frequently hit because they often lack advanced monitoring.
Compliance and peace of mind. ITDR provides an extra layer of visibility and reporting for businesses who need to show they’re protecting accounts.
Fast, automated protection. Huntress responds the moment suspicious activity is detected.
